Located in the Town of Farmington, the Biehl Nature Preserve is 283 acres and includes public access to the 53–acre Lake Twelve. The large wetland is an extension of the Milwaukee River Swamp, located to the north, which is part of the North Branch of the Milwaukee River. A small 0.4-mile loop trail from the parking area will take you atop a glacial kame offering breathtaking views of the area surrounding Lake Twelve. Most of the preserve is not accessible by trail, but if you’re up for a challenge, grab your mud boots and trek through hardwood and conifer swamp, old fields, and planted prairies that will soon be reforested. Species more common in northern parts of the state, including yellow birch, tamarack, and northern star flower, can be found in the mixed hardwood conifer swamps. Canoes, kayaks, paddleboards and other non-motorized boats welcome. To respect and protect the sensitive plant and animal communities that thrive here, please keep dogs on leash at all times.

To visit, follow the gravel road off Fillmore Rd. and park in the parking lot.
