Fellenz Woods is a 160-acre preserve in the town of Trenton, WI, containing nearly 1.5 miles of undeveloped Milwaukee River frontage with an extensive 2.88-mile trail system that loops through planted prairie, hardwood swamp, and floodplain forest. Prior to European settlement, most of the property was forested. The land in lower elevations near the river was a southern lowland or floodplain forest. Visit this preserve to see a remnant of this community type. Former agricultural fields were planted to prairie in the early 2000s and will be maintained as prairie into the future due to an airport easement restricting the growth of forest through the interior of the preserve. The prairies provide habitat for many regionally declining grassland birds while the floodplain forest and hardwood swamp are valuable habitat for amphibians, forest interior birds, and waterfowl. Restoring Lands’ staff and volunteers actively steward this preserve and plan to reforest areas adjacent to the forest outside the airport easement in addition to on-going efforts to remove aggressive non-local (invasive) plants. Enjoy mowed trail and footpaths throughout the preserve any time of year.
