Located in the Town of Fredonia, Huiras Lake Natural Area is 228 acres and contains the Huiras Lake State Natural Area. The preserve includes the northern portion of Huiras Lake, hardwood forest, and a mixed hardwood conifer swamp. The lack of recent disturbances, combined with relatively low numbers of introduced exotic plant species, renders this area among the most pristine wetlands in southeastern Wisconsin. Additionally, Huiras Lake’s plant communities include species that are more typically found in northern Wisconsin. Restoring Lands is actively reforesting former farm fields to reconnect uplands with the site’s wetland habitats. A 1-mile trail system from the parking area provides access to the lake. To respect and protect the sensitive plant and animal communities that thrive here, please keep dogs on leash at all times.
