Located in the Town of Farmington, Mayhew Preserve is 71 acres and has almost 700 feet of Milwaukee River along its northeast border. Until the mid-1900s, most of the preserve was farmed. Restoration of the site’s hydrology and natural communities in riparian areas and associated uplands directly improve water quality and wildlife habitat. A 0.4-mile trail from the parking area follows an agriculture field through a planted prairie and restored wetland in the center of the preserve. The northern end of the preserve does not contain a trail system, making river access difficult. To respect and protect the sensitive plant and animal communities that thrive here, please keep dogs on leash at all times.
