Tamarack Springs Preserve

West Bend, WI

Tamarack Springs (formerly County Line) Preserve protects the headwaters of Cedar Creek and is part of a large wetland complex that extends through nearby Cedar Springs Preserve. The preserve has been identified as a Natural Area of Regional Significance. Former landowners transitioned a farm field to prairie in 1972. The seeds to establish the prairie were collected from native areas located south of Kenosha, along the Wisconsin River, and along bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River. Decades of stewardship have resulted in a healthy prairie loaded with wildflowers and native grasses. Walk past the prairie onto a glacial esker and be rewarded by a peaceful view of a man-made pond surrounded by cedar trees – a must-see for those seeking a place to escape the stressors of the modern world and reconnect with nature. The preserve supports many critical species, including the endangered rusty-patched bumblebee. Protection of the wetland complex and associated uplands greatly benefits water quality in the Milwaukee River Watershed. To respect and protect the sensitive plant and animal communities that thrive here, please keep dogs on leash at all times.

Tamarack Springs has OPEN ACCESS hunting regulations. Please visit our Hunting Page for more information. View the Tamarack Springs Hunting Map here.

This preserve was formerly known as County Line. To visit, enter the grassed driveway from the east side of County Rd. Y and park in the small, grassed lot.
