How We Steward the Lands We Protect
At Restoring Lands, protecting land is only the beginning. True conservation means caring for these places long after they’re protected—ensuring that the forests, prairies, wetlands, and waterways we all depend on remain healthy and resilient for generations to come.
Our stewardship work is guided by science, rooted in partnerships, and powered by volunteers who share our love for Wisconsin’s natural landscapes. Every acre we protect is actively monitored and managed to support native habitats, improve ecological function, and provide opportunities for people to connect with nature.
Caring for the Land
We use a variety of conservation practices to restore and maintain the land’s natural balance. This includes removing invasive species, conducting prescribed burns, restoring native plant communities, managing wildlife habitat, and improving water quality. Each property has its own management plan—crafted to honor the land’s unique history, ecology, and community value.
Monitoring for the Future
Every property protected by Restoring Lands is visited regularly to ensure its conservation values are upheld. Our staff and volunteers monitor habitat health, document changes over time, and ensure that easement agreements are followed. This ongoing vigilance is essential to protecting the permanent promise of land conservation.
Engaging People in Stewardship
We believe that lasting conservation depends on people who care. That’s why we invite volunteers, landowners, students, and community groups to take part in stewardship activities—whether it’s planting native trees, removing invasive brush, or collecting seeds for restoration projects. Together, we build connections between people and the land that sustain conservation for the long term.
